What is VML?
VML or Vector Markup Language is a text-based vector graphics format
that is well suited to delivering graphics over the Internet. It
does not require a plugin and it is absolutely free!
Why?
VML is an application of Extensible Markup Language (XML). It is
a text-based encoding system, which means that the source code can
be viewed and altered in your browser. The conventional method of
delivering graphics to the web required that the image be physically
manipulated in some manner. Changing a color, a line weight, or
a fill pattern in VML is just a matter of modifying the code and
clicking the refresh button.
When?
VML has been around since about 1998.
Where?
VML is starting to appear in more and more places. With the recent
integration of VML support in SAFE
Software's new version of the Feature Manipulation Engine (FME),
VML can now be converted from various spatial data formats into
a 'ready to display' web page giving people a low-cost alternative
to putting maps on the net.
Who?
VML specifications were created jointly by Autodesk
Inc., Hewlett-Packard Company, Macromedia
Inc., Microsoft Corporation,
and Visio Corporation which has since been purchased by Microsoft.
Now for the bad news... The only web browser that currently supports
VML is Microsoft's Internet Explorer 5.0+ (with the VML option installed).
